Friends of JCDS Floyd Street Housing redefines what inclusive, equitable housing can be. Designed for individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD), this 17-unit multifamily building in downtown Overland Park creates a replicable model for attainable, wellness-centered living—where design fosters independence, comfort, and community connection.

Rooted in research and best practices, the design takes a holistic approach to accessibility, addressing not just mobility but also sensory comfort, emotional well-being, and meaningful engagement. Residential units are sensory-friendly and thoughtfully laid out to support autonomy and ease of movement.

At street level, a vibrant gallery and active studio for the JCDS Emerging Artists program connects residents with the broader arts community, while new office space for Friends of JCDS ensures ongoing advocacy and support. A flexible community room and open outdoor areas encourage daily interaction and connection to nature.

Architecturally, the building makes a bold statement: three dramatic “carves” bring natural light deep into interior corridors and open to elevated courtyards, each doubling as an open-air art gallery. These moments of daylight and beauty transform the experience of everyday spaces—proving that housing can be both supportive and inspiring.  This is more than a building. It’s a human-centered vision for equitable housing—one that prioritizes dignity, creativity, and well-being for all.
