Stillpoint House takes its name from T.S. Eliot’s Burnt Norton, and the idea of “the still point of the turning world.” Amid the movement and energy of the surrounding boulevard, the home becomes a place of balance and quiet reflection, an architectural pause where the rhythms of daily life unfold.
Situated along one of Kansas City’s most historic boulevards, Stillpoint House presents a confident expression of modern architecture that both acknowledges and reinterprets its traditional context. Surrounded on three sides by the steady rhythm of traffic and pedestrian activity, the home draws inspiration from the energy of the boulevard, exploring the relationship between motion, pause, and the moments of transition in between.
A sweeping curved wall, clad in native local limestone, anchors the design, addressing the parkway with a gesture that is both bold and welcoming. From this gesture, a dramatic twenty-foot cantilever extends outward, creating a sheltered threshold that greets passersby while marking the transition from the public realm to the private world of the home. As the site shifts away from the boulevard, the landscape reveals a dynamic sunken courtyard, an unexpected outdoor room that offers a secluded retreat at the home’s lowest level.
Throughout Stillpoint House, seemingly opposing forces are carefully balanced: exposure and privacy, movement and stillness, grandeur and intimacy. The result is a home that does more than respond to its setting, it creates a moment of calm within it.
